FON: Dessert Crawl Mania

The bar scene can get old.  Okay, not really, I enjoy the bar scene, but I do find pub crawls to be a bit daunting.  Isn’t there a rule about walking while intoxicated?  By the end of the night, from my experience at least, you’re just a field trip of assholes.  A group of people, taking up the sidewalk, being loud and obnoxious.  Alcohol can make people mean, loud, horny, or all vomity and nasty.  You know what doesn’t do that?  Dessert.  Dessert just makes people happy.

POP: One Sudden, Happy Moment

There are few feelings that compare with going about your life and in one sudden, happy moment — maybe you are on a sunny park bench or sharing a glass of wine with someone who delights you or falling asleep on a beach towel — you realize you are exactly where you want to be, living exactly as you always hoped.

TKC: July Resolutions

Whoa.  It’s July!  Time flies, I can’t believe it’s 2009, not to mention July of 2009!

I was looking back at my June Resolutions.  Obviously, I was in a bit of a funk.  Not feeling so hot about life as a freelancer.  It’s true, freelancing is hard.  This month I figured out a lot about playing the game, so to speak.  Meaning, how to get paid!  Let’s just say I’m feeling a lot better about being a freelancer these days.

I’m peppier and ready to make some July Resolutions.

FON: Basic Challah Baking

I’ve always been sort of intimidated by challah bread.  It just looks so pretty, so braided, so complicated.

Last night, at a challah baking class somewhere among the skyscrapers of New York City, I learned that the only thing to be afraid of is the mass amount of dough you’re going to end up with.  Challah may be super-duper pretty, but it’s really not complicated to make.  I also learned the origin of the bread.

BFD: “I Don’t Care For Your Fairytale”

Artist Dina Goldstein is doing a provocative photography project called Fallen Princesses. Of this project, she says:

These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The ‘…happily ever after’ is replaced with a realistic outcome…. I began to imagine Disney’s perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues.

And here is the chat Weetabix and I had about it earlier today… Read the full dispatch.

TKC: Cupcake Nazi Spews Anti-Cupcake Venom

There was an article in the New York Times this weekend about a NYC mom who has gone batshit crazy about snacks given to kids in school  She is a crusader against childhood obesity and diabetes. At first when I opened the link, I thought it was going to be something I was going to rally behind.  I think there’s a lot of reform to be had in regard to school lunches and physical education and their effect on our current generation of kids.  Instead, I left thinking that this woman was a complete and utter whack job.
